Looking for something off the beaten track when visiting Dubai, something other than the high-rise skyscrapers and tall office buildings? Then take a trip to BAPS Hindu Mandir, Abu Dhabi.

Just an hour drive away from the bustling city centre of Dubai is the capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi. A 30-minute drive away from the famous Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, standing like a lotus in the desert, is the BAPS Hindu Mandir - a must visit. It is the first traditional Hindu stone temple in the Middle East.

The Mandir is a beacon of harmony between cultures and religions, reflecting the multicultural and religious inclusivity in the UAE. It is home to intricate and inspiring carvings throughout the temple which depict scenes from the lives of major Hindu deities, alongside scenes from various cultures ranging from Egyptian culture to the local Islamic culture, as well stories from the ancient Mayan civilisation.

The Mandir was built using traditional Hindu architecture, meaning that there were no steel reinforcements used in construction. The entire Mandir was hand carved in India, before being assembled in Abu Dhabi. Built with pink sandstone and white marble, the Mandir stands proud surrounded by the desert, a testament to ancient Indian craftsmanship.

Every evening there is a special Ganga Arti that takes place which gives a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere, making you feel like you are in India even when you are over 1,000 miles away. The Mandir also plays host to many celebrations throughout the year bringing communities together in vibrant celebrations.

However, it is more than just a place of worship. The Mandir acts as a home for educational and cultural activities bringing different cultures, religions, and generations together, alongside being a place of peace, and delicious food. This Hindu Mandir welcomes everyone and should be a must on your next visit. Entry to the Mandir is free, however the campus is closed on Mondays. To get there, then you can take the 203 bus from Abu Dhabi city centre to the Mandir.
